The temazcal is one of the oldest rituals of Mesoamerican cultures. The word temazcalli comes from the Nahuatl language and means "steam bath house." It is a ceremony accompanied by a steam bath that takes place in a small dome built with stones and other natural elements; this space was believed to represent the interior of the earth, a place of transition between the living and the underworld.
