What is the Tilma Binding?

It is a spiritual ceremony, full of symbolism, to declare the union of two families through one couple. It is a familial and spiritual bond that will last a lifetime. Our ancestors are honored through their traditions and wisdom, and this commitment is guided by symbolism, explaining the meaning of a couple's union.

This ceremony, like the temazcal, is a ritual recorded in the Codex Mendoza, which means that it represented a ceremony of high importance and impact on the social and spiritual life of the ancient cultures of Mesoamerica.

Marriage is mentioned by various 16th-century chroniclers due to its importance and its frequent occurrence in several parts of Mesoamerica, primarily in the central highlands. Durango marks the northern border of Mesoamerica, where people from the central and highland cultures migrated to establish their homes, and where, years later, they also accompanied the conquistadors in settling these fertile lands.
